as a (seeming) mea culpa for the delays to 20F, apparently senseis are being previewed today. As its 130 am in germany currently, i imagine ours will take some time to get out, but thought i'd get a thread started to talk about them.

Yes, it is late here, but against my better judgement I'm still awake.

Enjoy our sensei preview.

Maybe... or it might just be flavor, like the Ashalan hate on ratboy.

(And yeah, that link worked just fine)

I'm sensing an overarching theme spread across clans like the Scout theme was in Ivory....

crane sensei - http://homeofthecraneclan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=403

SUPER amused that the first complaint is crane wishing their sensei was like ours.

Mechanics wise, I like the lion's better.

But yeah, that is amusing. :P

Uh, don't be. Sahara Sensei can be pretty good. Yeah, it's another Fear action, but it's also another Battle action you don't have to play from your hand. It also doesn't require setting people up to be dishonorable before the sensei can be activated.

any time anyone wishes they had something the spider had, my brain's first reaction is "lolwat???". i suppose i've got psychological scars from the last few years of spider's terrible mechanical state.

The funny thing is that we've had some stellar individual personalities! Even going back to EE, some of our bodies were fantastic and in IE we have some pretty good ones.

The biggest issue however, is that many of our guys are over costed (IMO, our printed battle actions are way too expensive) and many of our guys have terrible synergy to deck building friction (Honor loss peeps vs. 0 HR peeps for example.)

Only the Phoenix and Dragon strike me as remotely playable...............but that is without any knowledge of what will be in 20F.

And someone please correct me if I'm wrong here...........but, I don't think the Dragon stronghold has any abilities? Did I miss where the distinction between traits and abilities was removed? Because looking at the 20f dragon stronghold, I don't see any bolded text that would indicate an ability. Please someone tell me I'm horribly wrong on this.

somewhere in the l5r facebook group it was confirmed that the trait will be removed by this sensei, so they lose the ring.

Because the Stronghold trait says so.

LOL

Ha! reading for the win. Thanks for pointing out the obvious to ease my troubled mind.

In what appears to be a toned down environment, a blank 8/4/5 stronghold that goes first or a 9/4/5 stronghold that goes second with plus one handsize seems like it would be a pretty strong military option, regardless of whatever dishonor/honor shenanigans you feel like running.

as many suspect (demanded) we are getting a Kolat Edition for those tournaments effected by the shipping delay.

The crane sensei is solid, assuming a decent lineup of magistrates. If your playing military it has no downside.

Actually, almost all the sensei's look solid if you assume a decent lineup of themed personalities to support them. However, theme support in ivory 1 has been abysmal and most factions are better off playing no sensei/generic sensei (like tsujiken) and their best personalities and totally ignoring their themes. I'd expect more of the same for ivory 2.

This has been the case for as long as I can remember. Play the 40 best Dynasty cards and the 40 best Fate cards.

CE deck building was very heavily focused on themes, like spider breeder, dragon monks, mantis commanders, crab heroes, etc. I didn't play in Emperor but it seems at initial glance to be much the same.

I know a big part of the focus in Ivory was to make deck building more flexible so that player's weren't forced into theme specific decks. I think they've missed the mark though, and the themed actions and personalities are vastly weaker than most generic options. For instance, why would anyone ever play Two Swords, One Cut over Overwhelming Offense. It has a requirement to trigger the action, for a similar yet weaker effect. Its the same for almost every kensai action, there are other generic cards with easier requirements and more powerful effects.

Will 20 Festivals be like a base edition? If so, there should be many "Soul of" Personalities and vanilla boxables rather than experienced Personalities and carded story prizes, right?
