Hey Everyone!!!!

After last year's Kotei season and the news regarding the sale to FFG our group stopped playing. Now we're doing a tournament and the voting is showing that mostly everyone want's to use all the available cards (since most of the group started after Celestial started), but with a regular 40/40 and 3 of each card deck.

I don't want to think a lot so I was thinking FotM Onis with some old Oni from CE and the new ones from IE and 20F, some holdings and most of the negation from EE. Do you have any ideas of what else could be played?

Good advice: ban Foothold of the Mad. This stronghold is just overpowered and was fe banned in Modern format (where you play cards since Samurai to 20F). Just use The Maw's Grave or The Forgotten Temple instead.

In your format if you put all "refil province" cards in your deck you'll be able to buy 20G first turn, which is really, really NPE.

What Kempy said. The least enjoyable game of Modern that I've had was against Foothold before the banning, and it really felt like there was not a single thing I could do against the deck. Not a pleasant experience.

TFT for sure. FOTM only if you never want your friends to play you again.

Not Spider or Shadowlands, but I think a fun Fudo Cannon deck could be made with these restrictions.

TFT would be too slow I think, since the format makes honor and dishonor much stronger.

What about TSL? I played a deck very similar to Spark's unopposed deck during the end of EE and it was really effective. With some extra cards from CE and Iv, and some ninjas from 20F it might be better.

TSL is one of the best boxes we ever got. with an expanded personality and strategy base, i'm sure you could build a really scary deck out of it.

Not to slam on your creation, but have you actually played some games in this format?

Trust me when I say when you can put 3 ofs in the deck through various arcs that shit will be broken as hell. Especially honor and perhaps dishonor. When I first created Modern, I wanted to do 3 ofs and found out rather quickly that it wasn't gonna work. My team spent about 8 months testing Modern before releasing it and even then, there were a couple of missed things (*Cough foothold cough*). When you start branching out in to more than one arc, you get very similar cards that can abuse the system, especially honor holdings and such.

If I were you, and you wanted a fun and balanced environment, just play with the Modern rules. And if you have to limit it to only CE and forward, it will still be a balanced system and your playgroup will still have access to the same card pool.

I really didn't want Modern to be highlander, but it just had to be, unfortunately.

Not really, I voted to play emperor but people just wanted to play with all they cards and with regular rules.
It's not a competitive tournament, just an excuse to get together and play crazy shit. I don't think anyone will build their decks until the day before as well :p

What are 'regular rules'? lol
The rules changed every 3 months anyway! haha

But it's all good, man. As long as you and your friends are having fun, that's the only thing that matters. I was just offering something up that is both fun AND balanced. And even tho L5R is dead, there are still more and more people jumping on to the Modern format because it IS fun and balanced. And you get to throw around all your old cards and such.

Also, Modern is based on 20f rules so there isn't much to learn if you do happen to play it.

I know, I even tried to push for playing Modern in the past, but I have no idea why people didn't like it... maybe because they all built something really fast and with no thought put on the deck, and then didn't like the result.

I was just asking for some ideas for this CE Extended format they proposed, of course it will be a weird tournament with no testing at all, broken decks (that may not be there because no one will think much about deckbuilding), etc.

The reason they didn't like it was cuz they never played it. That's pretty much the reason everyone has... until they play it. Then they find that Modern is fun as hell!!

Interestingly my local playgroup has actually been playing with this format a lot lately as something a bit different for entertainment. It's pretty broken in general, so we already have a long banned and restricted list, which we will probably be expanding. It's a lot of fun, but obviously not recommended for any sort of competitive play.

Here is the current list straight from our facebook group - although take into account that this hasnt been updated in a while:

super extended format - uses the current 20F rules with a few exceptions. Cards from celestial onward are legal. Ring legality is kinda weird but cool, you have to choose your rings to be all from the same arc, celestial/emp/ivory etc

all previous errata's and mrp's are otherwise valid

banned list -
cards only available in war of honour multiplayer box
sunrise keep
lost traveler castle
imperial stronghold ( journeys end something?)
duty of the crab
that celestial that gives all your dudes conqueror
cavalry escort
Ki no oni
Kalanis Landing
foothold of the mad
asako karachu
wrath of kali ma
frozen in place
advance warning
border keeps/bamboo harvesters
den of inequity
friendly traveller saki
unfortunate incident
mantis woman who makes everyone cost -2 gold
tsujiken sensei

restricted list - you can chose one card from this list and include the normal amount of copies in your deck
last step castle
sacred rosary of the celestial searching
unsettling gathering
hamstrung
temple of purity
burn the village
oblivious
tamoko sensei
shika sensei
introspection
meeting the keepers

Watch list - cards that we are keeping an eye on for bullshit
Houhou

We'll see how it goes and if people like it I'll bring up your ban list.

Do you have any cool deck ideas for spider/nonhumans?
I'd like to play some weird TFT deck, but the format is way to fast for that SH

so far I've mostly been playing around with the Shadow's Lair decks. They are pretty strong, as they were in Emperor Edition. I've tried a beefed up version of the Ninja military deck, and a cool control deck based around Goju Kumoru, Tairao, Ninube Tsukau and Sly Deciever (plus of course some weapons, blood of shahai, theological indecision and the ret, help, abnw package). The latter is a little fragile, but amusing when it goes off. Haven't looked at onis yet myself, but they are on my list of things to try out.

I've seen some really fast enlightenment decks, and a scorpion control deck using the guy that gives himself and one of your guys -1/-1 tokens, along with the one that moves tokens around. Also a unicorn deck with the nagas in it and spells that can take TSL provinces turn 3 if it wants.

It seems like the format tends to Ivory/20F gold schemes (JPI + large farm and temple of destiny is great) for the efficiency and core emperor personalities/strategies with a few ringers from celestial and ivory (Ivory personalities are under powered generally, but cost competitive with the right abilities because of the gold change making all of the emperor/celestial guys quite expensive - which makes me think a cheap ivory dudes swarm deck with emperor actions might be amusing).
